Almost every one of us – at some point in our lives – has had to say goodbye to a best friend. Countless books have been written about the indelible impact pets have on us, the imprint they leave on our hearts, and the unconditional love they give us throughout their short, yet meaningful lives. That is why National Pet Memorial Day, on Sunday, September 14th, is such an important day for pet owners.

As pet guardians, we brace ourselves with the knowledge that, at least in comparison to our own lifespan, many of our pets will only grace our lives for 8-20 years. Even those pets who reside with us a little longer… there is never enough time, and their departure carries with it the weight of many memories and an empty place among our families.

If you have recently lost a pet, the pain you may be feeling is palpable and the loss, deeply troubling. You may be seeking ways to cope with grief, to help children understand the loss, or ways in which you can heal and affirm the life of your departed friend.

There is no one way to heal from the loss of a much-loved pet. However, there are some ways to make this journey easier through celebrating life, remembering the joyous moments, and sharing the beauty of your pet’s memory with family and friends.

Here are some tributes and activities that can provide peace and solace.

  • Hold a memorial service for your pet – share food, stories, laughter, and photographs or videos of his or her wonderful life with you.
  • Create a memory book or scrapbook with your favorite photos and memorabilia.
  • Make a donation to a pet rescue group, shelter, or animal protection nonprofit whose mission you support.
  • Create a memorial Facebook page where you can showcase your fur-friend’s photos for friends and family to view.
  • Honor your pet and attend to your healing by lighting a virtual candle or creating a special memorial to keep your friend’s memory alive for years to come.
  • If you have the time and space in your life, consider being a foster parent or adopting a homeless animal who needs love and care.
  • Visit your pet’s favorite park, trail, or lake and think of the many good times and laughs shared there.

The team at Seven Hills Veterinary Hospital has been a friend to countless animals and their human companions over the years.  We have been honored to be a part of your pet’s life, from your puppy or kitten’s first vaccinations, to his or her adulthood behavioral needs, and through end-of-life senior care. Because we understand how special your pet is to you and your family, it is our hope to provide the resources you need to help you through those stages of loss and grief.

We are here to help provide solace and answer questions, as well as encourage you to celebrate those amazing memories on National Pet Memorial Day by lighting a virtual candle on our website. May you and your loved ones be comforted and warmed by this meaningful holiday.
